Parallels today announced Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac with support for macOS Sierra and the addition of several new features. The company also announced a new standalone app called Parallels. Any Mac that is capable of running Parallels Desktop Lite and any Mac compatible with macOS Mojave should be able to get this working, but performance will be better on machines with more hardware resources, so the more RAM and the faster the CPU and hard disk, the better the experience will be. Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac saw release in August with macOS High Sierra 'readiness,' meaning certain features were not supported at launch. Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac sells for $79.99 from the Parallels online store, while existing users can upgrade for $49.99. Alternatively, Parallels Desktop Pro Edition is sold on a $99.99 annual subscription, discounted to $49.99 to existing Parallels 12 or 13 users.

Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac got its official release on Tuesday. The thirteenth version of the Windows virtualization software comes with numerous new features including support for macOS High Sierra and the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.
Top of the features list is Touch Bar support, enabling owners of compatible MacBook Pros to use the OLED strip with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as additional integration for the Windows Start Menu and Desktop, including Cortana, Task View, and Taskbar pinned elements. A Touch Bar Wizard also allows users to customize the Touch Bar and add their favorite Windows applications.
New dynamic resolution support mean users can change the window size of their Windows session, with booting and rebooting speed said to be faster and smoother as a result. A new Picture-in-Picture mode aims to let users monitor their virtual machine with ease, while support for the upcoming Windows 10 People Bar promises to allow users to view recent contacts in the Windows Taskbar or Mac Dock.
More generally, Parallels claims over 47 percent faster access to Windows files and documents compared to the previous version, faster file transfers over USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt SSD devices, and up to 32 vCPU and 128GB vRAM per virtual machine with Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro Edition, with code for all new versions optimized for macOS High Sierra (10.13) and Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Elsewhere, Parallels claims over 30 new additional tools can be found in version 13 that simplify everyday tasks on Mac and Windows. They include a drive cleaner, video conversion, a file archiver, a GIF creator, a video downloader, Do Not Sleep and Do Not Disturb modes, a Lock Screen, and the ability to temporarily hide files on the desktop, amongst many others.
Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac costs $79.99 for a new license. Existing users of Parallels Desktop for Home and Student can upgrade to V13 for $49.99, with a time-limited offer enabling users of the Desktop Pro Edition to upgrade for the same price (usually $99.99). There are many other tools and Pro, Business Edition and Toolbox subscribers will be provided with additional tools every quarter in future as the company seeks to build a recurring income stream for its business.

Cortana versus Siri

I’ve spent some time working with Parallels 11 and have been impressed by its tight integration between Windows and Mac features. What this means in use is that you can flip easily between tasks on both your Mac and VM machines, which makes use of the software an essential for any Mac user who may sometimes need to work with legacy Windows apps. The capacity to preview files held on a Windows virtual machine from your Mac system using QuickLook is a great example of this.

Sierra introduces Siri support to the Mac. That’s good and bad as I had been amusing myself using Cortana on my Windows VM to answer questions. Tight integration between the two systems had enabled me to ask Cortana for information from my Mac desktop, so long as my Windows VM was working in the background. I guess that’s become less tantalizing now I can use Siri on Sierra, but I look forward to a flurry of hopefully amusing comparisons of the kind of results the two assistants gather when used by the same person on the same machine.

Performance improvements

Parallels promises significant performance and battery life improvements in this version. Mac users on slower processors or with little installed memory will likely welcome this, as the software has traditionally been quite demanding to run. Enhancements promised in this release should (I’m told) provide:

Up to 90 percent faster Snapshot creation.
Up to 60 percent faster suspend of VMs.
Up to 25 percent faster Shared Folders performance.
Up to 10 percent battery life improvement.
Improved VM responsiveness when the Mac’s free memory becomes low.

Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac, Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro Edition and Parallels Desktop for Mac Business Edition are available today for subscribers and upgraders from Parallels Desktop 10 and 11. It will be available on August 23.
